Notifications explained
Notifications in monday.com help you stay on top of the work that involves you, without needing to manually check every board. This article explains what triggers notifications, what “Receive all” means, and how your personal notification settings control what you see.
Use it to understand exactly which actions will reach your bell, email, and mobile notifications so you can stay informed without getting overwhelmed.
What notifications are in monday.com?
Notifications in monday.com are alerts about changes and activity that are relevant to you. They can appear in three main places:
These notifications are designed to focus on the work that includes you, such as items you are assigned to, updates where you are mentioned, or boards you follow as a subscriber.
What actions trigger notifications?
When you are added as a board member (subscriber) to a board, you gain visibility and may begin receiving notifications related to that board. By default, monday.com sends notifications when specific events occur that involve you directly. These include:
- You are assigned as the owner or person on an item.
- You are @mentioned in an update or reply.
- An item you created or are subscribed to changes (for example, status, date, or people columns).
- A board you are subscribed to has activity that relates to items you follow.
- An automation sends a notification specifically to you (for example, “Notify this person when status changes to Done”).
Being a board member does not mean you will receive every single comment or change, unless you interact with or follow those items, and your personal notification settings allow for that type of activity.
Notification settings
Your notification experience is determined by a combination of your personal notification settings and your board notification settings.
- Your personal notification settings determine which types of events you would like to be notified about, such as assignments, updates, and automations.
- Board notification settings control where you would like to receive those notifications from. These settings determine whether a particular board you are subscribed to is active or muted for you (for example, “Receive all” vs “Mute all” on that board).
Manage personal notification settings
You can fine-tune your notifications to receive the right amount of information for your role. Your personal notification settings determine which type of notifications you will receive across all boards that you are subscribed to.
To adjust your personal notification settings:
1 Click on your profile picture in the top right corner.
2 Select My profile and open the Notifications tab.
3 Review the sections for Bell, Email, and Mobile notifications.
4 Turn on or off the different types of events you want to be notified about, such as assignments, updates, mentions, or automation notifications.
5 Your changes are saved automatically and apply across all boards.
You can also access your personal notification settings by clicking the bell icon, selecting the three dots to the right of a notification, then choosing "Change notification settings" to visit your account profile, where you can view and edit your saved notification preferences.
Manage board notifications
Sometimes we don't want notifications for all actions on every board we're subscribed to. We've made it easier to customize notifications for specific boards, allowing you to choose which types of notifications to receive and from where.
1Click on the three dots in the top right corner of your board
2Select "Notifications"
This will open up your board notification settings.
You can also access your board notification settings by clicking on the bell icon and selecting the three dots in the bottom right of the notification. From here, select "Board notification settings." This will redirect you to that specific board, where you can follow the first instructions to access the notification settings on the board itself.
Within your board notification settings, you will see various notification options for the specific board you are on, giving you autonomy over the notifications you receive from this board!
- Mute for everyone
As the owner of a board, you can choose to mute all notifications for anyone subscribed to that board. To do this, select the "Mute" toggle and click "Save". If you are not the board owner, this option will not be available.
- Receive all
The “Receive all” option in the board notification settings determines how much board-related activity is included in your notifications. “Receive all” does not mean you will receive every change on the board for everyone. Instead, it means:
- You receive all relevant notifications for you from that board, based on your role in items (assignments, subscriptions, mentions, and automation rules that include you).
- You do not automatically receive notifications for items or changes that do not involve you in any way.
“Receive all” tells monday.com to send you all the notifications that match your personal relationship to the board and its items, rather than every piece of activity that happens there.
- Mute all
By selecting "Mute all" under "My notifications", all actions that trigger a notification on this board will be muted for you only.
- Custom
The "Custom" notification options enable you to select which types of notifications you want to receive from activities on this board. The customization allows you to be notified of only the actions you choose, including "Mentioned me," "Assigned me," and "Automations with a 'notify' step."
Best practices for managing notifications
- Start broad, then refine: Begin with “Receive all” and full personal notifications, then turn off noise sources you do not use.
- Use @mentions intentionally: Mention people only when you need their attention, so their notification feed stays meaningful.
- Subscribe to the right items: Follow items and groups you care about instead of relying on full-board activity.
- Review your settings periodically: As your role changes, adjust your notification preferences to match your current responsibilities.
Troubleshooting notifications
- I am not receiving the notifications I expect to receive. → Check your personal notification settings to confirm the event type is enabled, and make sure the board is not muted for you.
- I am receiving too many notifications. → Review your subscriptions and turn off activity types you do not need, or mute specific boards where you are a member but not actively involved.
- I am missing email notifications. → Confirm email notifications are enabled, and check your email spam folder or filters to ensure messages from monday.com are allowed.
- Automations are not notifying me. → Open the automation recipe and verify that you are one of the targeted people or that the people column correctly includes you.
